QUOTES
“Directed by Alison Moritz…The Knock tells with notable care and nuance a story not just set in America, but one that is singularly American.” (Opera News)
“An evocative and beautifully woven piece, The Knock manages to be many things at once, reverential and damning, internal and operatic, all while concisely portraying the complicated existence of those left behind.” (Opera News)
FROM ALISON
The Knock is a beautiful, intimate opera in one act from Aleksandra Vrebalov and Deborah Brevoort, originally scheduled to premiere at Glimmerglass Festival in 2021. As the pandemic wore on, Artistic Director Francesca Zambello continued to advocate for the piece’s development, and the cast and creative team workshopped the opera virtually. Finally, after months of developing the opera using our screens and recording devices, the decision was made to translate our concepts onto film rather than to the stage.
Working in a new medium allowed me to voice the characters’ innermost thoughts and reexamine what makes a moment operatic without feeling overtly theatrical. The Knock marks my debut as a filmmaker, and I’m profoundly grateful to my collaborators for their support.
